Tactical Silence: Internal Situational Awareness
A noisy internal comm-link is a liability. Learn the technical skill of Tactical Silence to reset your nervous system and maintain peak performance.
The 30-Second Summary
In the field, a radio full of static is a liability. In your life, an internal dialogue full of trauma-looping and hyper-vigilance is a tactical failure. Tactical Silence(the disciplined practice of biblical meditation)is the technical process of clearing the “buffer” of your brain. By intentionally slowing the system down for 10 minutes a day, you lower your baseline cortisol, reset your sympathetic nervous system, and regain the focus required to be a high-capacity operative for God in Southeast Missouri.
Clearing the Comm-Link
If you’ve spent any time in Law Enforcement or the Military, you know that the “static” of a hard shift doesn’t just disappear when you clock out. Your brain continues to process the data; the high-speed pursuit on Highway 60, the medical call in Van Buren, or the threat assessment in the Mark Twain National Forest.
When you don’t intentionally clear that data, it stays in the “foreground” of your mind. This leads to what we call “Lag”; you’re physically at the dinner table with your family, but your processor is still back on the shift.
You’re sitting there holding a fork, but your heart rate is still red-lining. Your kid is complaining about some drama at school, and you can’t even process it because you’re still replaying the chaos of a domestic call or a wreck on Highway 60.
Every sudden noise in the house makes your jaw clench. Your spouse is talking about the weekend schedule, but you’re staring right through the wall behind them.
You are completely numb to the people you love most because your internal alarms refuse to stand down. You are a ghost in your own house.
This is the enemy at work.
He wants your frequency jammed with static. If he can keep you hyper-vigilant and distracted, you are completely neutralized as a leader when you walk through the front door.
Psalm 46:10 gives us the operational directive to break that loop: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Tactical Silence is the protocol for dumping the cache. It isn’t an eastern mystic practice meant to just “empty your mind”; it is the technical discipline of submitting your mind, stopping the noise, and placing your internal environment back under the authority of your Commander.
Tactical Silence Protocol
The Posture: Sit upright, feet flat. This is an active, alert posture. You are reporting for a debrief, not taking a nap.
The Breathing: Use Box Breathing (4 seconds in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold). This is a technical hack for your nervous system that signals to your body that the immediate threat has passed.
The Observation: When thoughts of the shift or the past arise, acknowledge them as “incoming data” but don’t engage the transmission. Let them pass through the frequency while you remain anchored in the present.
Maintaining the Edge in the Ozarks
At Covenant Church, we believe that the strongest men and women are those who have mastered their internal environment. A “Sound Mind” (2 Timothy 1:7) is a skill developed through discipline, not a lucky accident. Tactical Silence ensures that when you are needed(whether in the woods or in your living room)your frequency is clear and your response is measured.

Frequently Asked Questions
I can’t sit still for more than 30 seconds. Is my brain broken? No, it’s just over-clocked. Like any new tactical skill, it takes time to build the muscle. Start with 2 minutes. The “itch” to move is just your system trying to stay in its high-alert habit. Stay the course.
Does this replace my regular prayer time? Think of Tactical Silence as the “Setup” for prayer. It clears the noise so that when you speak to God, you are doing so from a place of clarity rather than panic. It is the “Listening” half of the sit-rep.
Can I use this while I’m actually on duty? Absolutely. Box breathing is a field-tested tool. If a situation is escalating, taking 16 seconds to perform one “Box” reset can be the difference between a controlled response and a catastrophic over-reaction.
Will this make me less alert to threats? The opposite. By lowering your resting baseline, you increase your “Explosive Capacity.” When you aren’t wasting energy on constant, unnecessary hyper-vigilance, you have more resources available to react when a real threat emerges.
Action Steps
- The 0800 Reset: Set a timer for 5 minutes tomorrow morning. Practice the Box Breathing protocol in total silence before you check your phone or your gear.
- The Comm-Dump: Immediately after your next shift, spend 2 minutes in your vehicle practicing Tactical Silence before you pull into your driveway. Do not turn on the radio.
- The Sit-Rep: After your silence, ask God one question: “What are my orders for the time I have with my family tonight?”
