The 10/90 Standard

Learn the first rule of Kingdom allocation: giving the Master His cut before you touch the rest of the resources.

The 30-Second Summary

The 10/90 Standard is the foundational habit of every Kingdom manager in Southeast Missouri. It is a declaration of ownership. Before you pay your mortgage in Van Buren or buy groceries for your family, you allocate the first 10% of your gross income (the Tithe) back to the Master’s house. This isn’t a bill or a tax; it is a tactical reset for your heart that ensures the remaining 90% is managed with a spirit of stewardship rather than a spirit of greed.

The First Allocation

In any management role, the first priority is to satisfy the Owner. If you run a business but refuse to pay the investors their share of the profits, you are in breach of contract. The same logic applies to our finances.

The Tithe(the first 10%)is the physical evidence that you have executed the Ownership Shift. By giving off the top, you are essentially telling the Master, “I remember that You provided 100% of this, and I am honored to manage the 90% You have left in my care.” This practice breaks the power of “The Owner Delusion” and keeps your eyes fixed on the mission of Re-Deployment.

Why Gross instead of Net?

We often hear people ask if they should tithe on their “take-home pay” or their total earnings. In the Ozarks, we believe in high-stakes honesty.

If you are a manager, you account for the whole harvest, not just what’s left after the government takes its share. Tithing on the gross income is a declaration that God has the first claim on your life, before the state and before your personal needs. It is an act of trust that the 90% remaining, when managed according to the Stewardship Engine, will go further than 100% managed in your own strength.

The 10/90 Psychological Reset

The 10/90 Standard does something for your brain that no other financial habit can do. It creates a “Scarcity Shield.”

When you give 10% away immediately, you are forced to be more intentional with the rest. You can no longer drift through your spending. You have to audit your cash flow and prioritize your Needs over your Wants. This discipline is the exact same muscle you need to build your Dividend Engine and reach early retirement. If you cannot manage a 10% gift, you will never manage a 50% savings rate.

Reclaiming the Territory of the Heart

At Covenant Church, we don’t need your money, but we desperately want you to be free from the weight of ownership. We’ve seen hundreds of families in Van Buren find total financial peace simply by moving to the 10/90 Standard. When you put the King first, the rest of the logistics start to fall into place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m in so much debt that I can’t afford 10%?

This is the most common concern in Southeast Missouri. While we understand the pressure of debt, we believe you cannot “math” your way out of a spiritual problem. Start the 10/90 Standard today as an act of repentance and trust. Then, use the remaining 90% to aggressively execute the Debt Strike protocol.

Should I give my tithe even if I don’t agree with how the church spends it?

If you don’t trust the leadership of your church, you should find a Phalanx you do trust. However, the tithe is an act of obedience between you and the Master. You are responsible for the giving; the leaders are responsible for the stewardship of that gift.

If I’m single, should I give more than 10%?

Many singles find that because their overhead is lower, they can move past the 10/90 Standard to a 20/80 or even a 50/50 model. The 10% is the floor, not the ceiling. If you can give more and still fund your FIRE timeline, do it joyfully.

Does the 10% have to go to Covenant Church?

The biblical model is to bring the tithe into the “storehouse”: the local community of faith where you are fed and known. Offerings above the 10% can be directed toward other missions, but the foundational tithe belongs to your local church family in Van Buren.

Action Steps

  1. The Gross Calculation: Look at your paystub. Calculate what 10% of your total earnings (before taxes) looks like.
  2. The Automation: Set up a recurring gift through your bank or the church app. Don’t leave the Master’s share to chance; make it automatic.
  3. The 90% Prep: Look at the remaining money and prepare your mind. In the next article, we are going to show you exactly how to split that 90% into a High-Performance Budget.
